Vinton Native Gordon Young, 83, Passes Away at His Home

Vinton, Iowa – Gordon “Gordie” Young, a beloved 83-year-old resident of Vinton, peacefully passed away at his home on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.

A memorial service will be held in his honor on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Van Steenhuyse-Teahen Funeral Home in Vinton. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the same location. Gordie will be laid to rest at Bear Creek Cemetery.

Born on March 5, 1941, in Traer, Iowa, Gordie was raised with strong values of hard work and community. He graduated from Traer High School in 1959. His life took him through a fulfilling career, working as a truck driver and spending 35 years as a machinist for John Deere. However, his passion for farming remained his greatest joy.

Gordie married Betty Riggle on January 21, 1979, and together they built a life filled with love in rural Vinton. The couple raised four children and were proud grandparents to ten grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; their children Mik, Rik, Kim, and Wanda; as well as a large extended family. Gordie was preceded in death by his parents, Devere and Wanda Young, his daughter Kelly Garner, and siblings Dick, Betty, and Bill Young.

Known for his infectious smile and love for farming, Gordie leaves behind a legacy of dedication to family and community. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
