Sedgwick, Kansas – Katelyn Heier, a 21-year-old resident of Sedgwick, Kansas, tragically lost her life in a severe three-vehicle accident on Interstate 135 near Valley Center on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 3:20 p.m. when Heier’s Toyota Camry collided with a Honda Accord while traveling northbound on the congested I-135. After the initial impact, Heier’s vehicle veered into the highway median, crossing into southbound traffic, where it collided head-on with a Ford F-450 pickup truck. The force of the collision resulted in Heier’s immediate death at the scene.
The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) confirmed that Heier was not wearing a seatbelt, which may have significantly contributed to the fatality. The KHP also noted that seatbelts can reduce the risk of fatal injury by 45%, urging drivers to prioritize seatbelt safety.
The driver of the Ford F-450 survived the crash, and a passenger in the truck reported minor injuries. No other severe injuries were reported.
