Revered Educator and Community Leader Hugh Gilbert Riley Passes Away at 90

Hugh Gilbert "Sam" Riley, a distinguished educator and community leader, passed away peacefully at his home in Remus on September 13, 2024. He was 90 years old.

Riley, born on May 12, 1934, to Hugh K. and Beulah B. (Schofield) Riley, had a profound impact on education throughout his career. After graduating from Beal City High School, he served in the U.S. Army in Germany before earning his degrees in Education from Central Michigan University, thanks to the GI Bill. Riley dedicated his professional life to Shepherd Public Schools, ultimately serving as Superintendent.

In a statement about his legacy, Berry Funeral Home wrote, “Hugh leaves behind a legacy of helping others to reach their full potential.” Riley is remembered fondly by his family, including his wife Joy, sons Kelley (Kathleen) and Ted, and his grandchildren Samuel, Meredith, and Benjamin Riley.

Social media tributes highlight his influence and kindness. Christopher Yates commented, “I’m so sorry Joy, Kelley, and Ted. Sending prayers!” while Julie Prout described him as “a wonderful man and mentor,” and Michelle Browning Knapp added, “So sad he was an amazing person. RIP Mr. Riley.”

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no public services. The family has requested donations to Corewell (Spectrum) Health Hospice & Palliative Care in lieu of flowers.
