Renowned Rockford Musician and Producer Daniel McMahon Passes Away at 41

Rockford, Illinois – Daniel James McMahon, a celebrated multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and audio engineer from Rockford, Illinois, has passed away at the age of 41. McMahon, born in November 1982, was a pivotal figure in the Midwest music scene, known for his extensive contributions to numerous projects as both a performer and producer.

Throughout his career, McMahon worked with many notable musicians and bands, including Cory Chisel and The Wandering Sons, Cameron McGill and What Army, and served as a key member of Miles Nielsen’s band, The Rusted Hearts. His talents extended beyond the stage, making him a highly sought-after record producer and audio engineer.

One of McMahon’s most notable achievements was composing original music, alongside Miles Nielsen, for the 2009 documentary film Undefeated. The film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2012, with McMahon’s evocative score playing a significant role in enhancing the film’s emotional depth.

Over the years, McMahon also collaborated with composer Michael Brook, further elevating the musical experience of Undefeated. His work with the Wisconsin-based folk-pop duo Daniel and the Lion caught the attention of Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz, who invited the duo to perform at the prestigious Outlaw Roadshow showcase in New York City during the CMJ Music Marathon festival in 2013. McMahon’s contributions were instrumental in the recognition the band received, with Duritz praising them as “the best pop band we’ve ever had at the Roadshow.”

In addition to his studio work, McMahon regularly performed with The Monday Night Band alongside Bun E. Carlos, the legendary drummer from Cheap Trick, entertaining local audiences with their exclusive Monday night performances.

The Law Office Pub & Music Hall shared their grief on Facebook, stating, “Daniel McMahon was one of the best that has ever graced our stage and we are absolutely heartbroken that he’s been taken from us way too soon. Cherish every day with the ones you love the most #cancersucks.”

Miles Nielsen, a longtime collaborator and friend, expressed his sorrow, “Thank you for always pushing me, I’ll miss you forever on my right side.”

George Champ simply wrote, “R.I.P.”

Daniel McMahon’s passing is a significant loss to the music world, but his legacy will live on through his impactful work and the countless lives he touched with his music.
