Phoenix Police Officer Zane Coolidge Dies from Injuries in the Line of Duty After Responding to Larceny Call

Phoenix, Arizona – Police Officer Zane Coolidge of the Phoenix Police Department tragically passed away on Friday, September 6, 2024, after succumbing to gunshot wounds he sustained three days earlier while responding to a larceny incident. Officer Coolidge was shot while pursuing a suspect on foot near 16th Street and McDowell Road.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. when officers responded to a call regarding a larceny from a motor vehicle. Upon arrival, the suspect fled on foot, jumped a fence, and opened fire on the officers. Officer Coolidge, along with another officer, was struck by gunfire. Coolidge was transported to a local hospital, where he remained until he succumbed to his injuries three days later.

The suspect, a convicted felon on parole, has been charged with first-degree murder and illegal possession of a firearm.

Officer Zane Coolidge served with the Phoenix Police Department for five years. He leaves behind his wife and infant daughter.

The news of his passing has deeply affected both the Phoenix community and law enforcement. Several people shared their thoughts and prayers on Facebook to honor Officer Coolidge.

Susan Kutilek posted, "Rest In Peace Officer Coolidge. Thank you for your service. Prayers for your family and the Phoenix Police Department."

Margaret Anne Lamonto expressed her condolences, writing, "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time."

James Stinger simply added, "R.I.P. Officer Coolidge."

The Phoenix community continues to mourn the loss of a dedicated officer, with others such as Brenda Cryder sharing, "So sorry to read this. May God bless and comfort his family."

In the wake of the tragedy, a fundraiser has been organized by Scotty Bach to support Officer Matthew Haney, Coolidge’s partner, who was also injured in the same incident. Haney, who returned fire during the ambush and rendered aid to Coolidge, was shot in the chest and is currently recovering. The fundraiser aims to assist Haney and his family as he navigates both his physical recovery and the emotional toll of losing his partner.

Officer Coolidge’s death marks a heartbreaking loss for the Phoenix Police Department and his family. He will be remembered for his service and sacrifice to the community.
