Mikki Lynn Schuitema of Muskegon Passes Away After Courageous Battle with Cancer at Age 58

Muskegon, Michigan – Mikki Lynn Schuitema, a 58-year-old resident of Muskegon, passed away on September 12, 2024, after bravely battling cancer. Born on July 28, 1966, to Marvin and Maria (Gardner) Howard, Mikki lived a life filled with love, adventure, and dedication, leaving a profound impact on those who knew her.

Mikki was a professional with over two decades of experience as a Phlebotomist at Quest Diagnostics. She was a graduate of Muskegon High School and earned her Medical Assistant Certificate from Ross Medical Education Center. Mikki was known for her lively spirit and passion for life.

On June 23, 2021, Mikki married Todd Schuitema in Las Vegas, Nevada. Together, they shared a love for motorcycles, boating, and spontaneous road trips. Mikki was also a devoted fan of local sports teams such as the Detroit Lions, Tigers, and Red Wings. Her community involvement was extensive, including being a member of Living Word Church in Muskegon and the Vikings Linne Lodge #57.

Mikki’s love for her family was unwavering. She is survived by her husband Todd, her children, Michael Thompson of Las Vegas, Jesse Ketchum of Spring Lake, and Paige Heins of Clarksville, along with her granddaughter, Hallie Lynn Heins. She also leaves behind her father Marvin Howard, sister Michaun Sweet, and numerous other family members. Mikki was preceded in death by her mother, Maria Howard.

A celebration of Mikki’s life will be held at Living Word Church on Thursday, September 19, 2024. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, September 18, at The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral and Cremation Services.

On Facebook, friends and family have been sharing their condolences. Michael Farage shared, “Mikki Howard Schuitema has taken the journey to heaven after fighting the fight. She was Mrs. outgoing and a true reflection of Jesus Christ in every phase." Jim White, Katie Nolan Carr, and Marlene Thompson offered prayers, while Jane Erpenbeck Engle expressed her condolences to the family.

Mikki’s family requests donations be made to Labor Day Cars for Cancer in Muskegon in lieu of flowers. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
