Mary Louise Lichty, Past President of Junior League of Waterloo-Cedar Falls, Dies at Age 99

Waterloo, Iowa – Mary Louise Lichty, a well-respected community leader and former President of the Junior League of Waterloo-Cedar Falls, passed away on August 31, 2024, at the age of 99. Known for her kindness, leadership, and unwavering commitment to her family and community, Mary lived a life filled with service and love.

Born on December 11, 1924, at St. Francis Hospital in Waterloo, Mary was the eldest child of Ruth Louise and Joseph H. Lutgen. She was a graduate of Clarke College and received the prestigious Mary Francis Clarke Award for her leadership and service. She pursued a career in nutrition and worked at Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa.

Mary’s contributions to the Junior League were extensive, notably serving as its President and actively working with the organization’s Thrift Shop. In addition to her service with the Junior League, she was a member of the Waterloo Women’s Club and PEO, organizations where she continued to give back to her community.

Her family life was equally rich and full. Mary married Robert F. Lichty on June 23, 1948, and together they raised four children. Mary was known for her culinary skills and often hosted family gatherings, including her annual backyard fish fry and holiday celebrations. Her children and grandchildren honored her on her 90th birthday with a special cookbook featuring her favorite recipes.

Mary’s life also reflected her deep Catholic faith. A founding member of St. Edward’s Church, she was a devoted member of the congregation where she found comfort in prayer and the sacraments.

The Junior League of Waterloo-Cedar Falls shared their sorrow on Facebook, stating, “We are saddened to hear of the passing of Mary Louise Lichty, Past President of the Junior League of Waterloo-Cedar Falls. Mary lived a full and gracious life well into her 100th year.”

Mary’s legacy lives on through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward the values she instilled. She will be laid to rest following a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Edward Catholic Church on September 7, 2024.

Her family expressed deep gratitude to the caregivers at Western Home and Cedar Valley Hospice for their support during Mary’s final days.
