Longtime West Frankfort Resident Janice Lee (Overturf) Layne Passes Away at 67

Janice Lee (Overturf) Layne, a cherished member of the West Frankfort community, has passed away at the age of 67. Layne, who died on September 12, 2024, at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion, was remembered fondly by those who knew her.

Layne was born on October 29, 1956, in Christopher to Carl and LaVaughn (Talley) Overturf. She was known for her tenure as the owner of the City Limits Lounge in Benton and later as a cook at the Christopher School District. She married Terry Layne on August 25, 2018, who survives her, along with their daughter Michelle (Gary) VanHoorebeke of Benton, and three granddaughters: Sydney, Emily, and Macy VanHoorebeke.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at 12:00 PM at Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher, with Rev. Donnie Colson officiating. Visitation will precede the service, starting at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Knight Cemetery in Buckner.

Social media reactions reflect the deep impact Layne had on her community. Dottie Nikolich remembered her as a “tell it like it is gal,” while Larissa Wilkerson extended “prayers for all of you” to the grieving family. Rhonda Crnokrak Todd also expressed heartfelt condolences, saying, “So very sorry.”
