Long-Time Drax Golf Club Member Norman ‘Peter’ Rowbottom Passes Away, Leaving Lasting Legacy

Drax, England – The community at Drax Golf Club is mourning the loss of Norman ‘Peter’ Rowbottom, a long-standing member and cherished figure at the club, who passed away recently. Peter, affectionately known by many as "Fireman Pete" and "Smokie," was a familiar and beloved presence at both Drax and Eggborough Golf Clubs. His passing has left a profound void in the hearts of his friends, family, and fellow golfers.

Peter had been a key volunteer at Drax Golf Club for many years, dedicating countless hours to maintaining the course and contributing to the club’s success. He was particularly known for his work in the greenkeepers’ shed, where his expertise and commitment were deeply valued by the entire community. The club has expressed its gratitude for Peter’s tireless efforts, noting that his absence will be felt both on and off the course.

In July, members of Drax Golf Club learned of Peter’s deteriorating health. To honor his contributions and legacy, the club planted two magnolia trees near the 5th tee, a tribute to Peter’s life and dedication to the club. These trees are hoped to thrive and stand as a lasting reminder of the impact Peter had on the golf club and its members.

The Drax Golf Club committee expressed their deep sadness in a statement, saying, "Peter will be sadly missed by all at Drax Golf Club. Your guidance and presence in the greenkeepers’ shed will be a void we can never fill."

Several individuals who knew Peter shared their thoughts and memories on social media, highlighting his kind spirit and dedication.

Neil Banner commented, "I first had the great pleasure of meeting and instantly becoming friends with Peter when I joined Eggborough Golf Club over 25 years ago. He was always the guy to go to if you needed anything at all."

Kevin Harrison added, "RIP Peter the ‘firestarter’. Thank you for everything you did as a volunteer in shaping the future of Drax Golf Club. You’ll never be forgotten by all your friends."

Hannah Rowbottom wrote, "He was the best man and so kind. Love you, grandad."

Others, including Philip Jenny Hammond, shared fond memories: "Rest in peace ‘Fireman Pete,’ top man at Drax and Eggborough Golf Clubs. I’ll miss our trips down memory lane."
