Kentucky District Judge Kevin Mullins Tragically Killed in Letcher County Courthouse Shooting

Whitesburg, Kentucky – District Judge Kevin Mullins has tragically passed away following a shooting at the Letcher County Courthouse on Thursday, September 19, 2024. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. when Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines allegedly entered Judge Mullins’ chambers and fatally shot him.

According to authorities, Sheriff Stines surrendered to police immediately after the incident. He reportedly walked into the judge’s office, informed the court staff that he needed to speak with Mullins privately, and then closed the door. Moments later, gunshots were heard from inside the office. Stines emerged with his hands up and was handcuffed in the courthouse foyer.

Kentucky State Police and Letcher County Coroner Perry Fowler arrived at the scene and began their investigation, which continued into the evening. Main Street in Whitesburg was closed off, and officials cleared the area as they collected evidence and interviewed witnesses. The courthouse staff, who witnessed the event, stood outside in shock and disbelief.

The motive behind the shooting is still under investigation. Authorities have not released details regarding the nature of the altercation that led to this tragic event. Judge Mullins, a respected figure in the community, was known for his dedication to his family and his role as a loving husband and father of two.

Funeral arrangements for Judge Mullins will be announced by his family in the coming days. The community of Letcher County is mourning the loss of a dedicated public servant who served with integrity and commitment.
