James Alan Weeks of Troy, South Carolina, Passes Away at 38, Leaving a Deep Impact on the Avian Community

Troy, South Carolina – It is with profound sadness that the family of James Alan Weeks announces his passing on September 11, 2024. Known for his love of parrots and his dedication to the avian community, James, affectionately called Jim, was 38 years old.

Born on March 8, 1986, in Augusta, Georgia, Jim dedicated much of his life to serving others, beginning his career as a server during his high school years before joining the United States Marine Corps. He served honorably from 2008 to 2012 as a helicopter mechanic, earning numerous commendations, including the Good Conduct Medal.

Beyond his military career, James founded Straw Hat Parrots, a nonprofit organization committed to the care and well-being of parrots. His passion for birds was evident in his personal flock of over 30 parrots, and he became a well-known figure in the free flight community, offering advice and education on bird care.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Alicia Weeks, and his stepchildren, Noah and Emma. His passing has left a significant void in the lives of those who knew him.

On social media, members of the avian community and friends have expressed their condolences.

Patricia Howell commented, "Oh I am so sorry. I’ve been following him and using his advice to provide more stimulation for my birds. He has such an impact on the avian world."

Brit Reese added, "This is so tragic. I am so terribly sorry for his loss. This hurts all of us with everything he has done for the aviculture and free flying community."

Griffi The Dancing Cockatoo expressed, "Oh my god! I’m so sorry to hear this! James was such a good person!"

The outpouring of grief continued with Sheila Harris-O’Donoghue, who shared, "This is heartbreaking news! Sending you much love and light as you travel this journey."

Many in the bird community, including organizations like Birds and Beaks Rescue and Rehab, echoed their sorrow, emphasizing the deep connection James had with parrots and how he will be sorely missed.

Jim’s memorial service will take place at Platts Funeral Home in Evans, Georgia, on September 20, 2024. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Veteran’s Mental Health awareness, a cause close to James’ heart.

James Alan Weeks’ legacy of service, love, and dedication will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, both in the avian community and beyond.
