Indiana Resident Patrick Vandegriff Passes Away at Home After Battling Cancer for a Decade, Family Organizes Memorial Fundraiser

New Castle, Indiana – Patrick Vandegriff, a long-time resident of New Castle, Indiana, passed away on September 9, 2024, following a prolonged battle with cancer. His niece, Marci Burk, honored his final wish to die peacefully at home, a promise she fulfilled after serving as his primary caregiver in his last days. Vandegriff, who had battled cancer for 10 years, had expressed his desire not to spend his final moments in a hospital or nursing facility.

Patrick Vandegriff was known and loved by many in New Castle, Fishers, and Muncie, Indiana, where he made friends with nearly everyone he encountered. He was often seen around town in his signature bandana and jean jacket, striking up conversations and helping others whenever possible, even during his own illness. Despite facing numerous hardships, including a disability from a young age, Patrick remained dedicated to helping others and spreading kindness.

His niece, Marci Burk, has now set up a GoFundMe page to help raise funds for two celebrations of life: one in New Castle, where Patrick considered many friends to be family, and another in Brown County State Park, a place he cherished deeply. Marci shared how difficult it has been after devoting herself to Patrick’s care and now seeks support to honor his memory.

Marci took to Facebook to share the emotional toll of caring for her uncle through his final stages, with Vernon Taylor also offering his thoughts on the platform. Vernon posted, "Marci was there for her Uncle Pat through all stages of death. It was extremely hard on her emotionally." He went on to praise her dedication to ensuring Patrick’s last wish was honored.

Patrick’s passing has left a deep void in the hearts of his family and friends. He was a lifelong fan of The Beatles, and fittingly, his final moments came after the song "She Loves You" played, a track he loved dearly.

As Marci organizes the memorials, she is asking for donations to cover the costs and to help her get back on her feet after taking time away from work to care for her uncle. She expressed her gratitude for any assistance during this challenging time.

Patrick Vandegriff will be remembered as a selfless individual who touched many lives. His kindness, love for music, and dedication to helping others made a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
