Glenn R. Doran, Longtime Educator and School Leader, Passes Away at 79 in Woodstock, GA

Glenn R. Doran, a dedicated educator, leader, and cherished member of the Mason, MI, and Woodstock, GA, communities, passed away on September 12, 2024, at the age of 79. Born on February 14, 1945, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, Doran left a lasting legacy in education and public service, spanning several decades.

After graduating from Sault Area High School in 1963, Doran earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Michigan State University in 1967, followed by a master’s and doctorate from the same institution. He spent 29 years serving Mason Public Schools, beginning as a teacher and eventually becoming superintendent from 1981 to 1996. His dedication extended beyond the classroom, as he was involved with the Mason Optimist Club, the Mason Area United Way, and the Mason State Bank board of directors.

In 1996, Doran relocated to Sylacauga, Alabama, where he continued his career as a superintendent until his retirement in 2001. In his later years, Doran moved to Georgia to be closer to his grandchildren, enjoying travel, woodworking, and time spent with family and friends.

"He was a great friend, loved his homemade bread," recalled Robert Caltrider, a former colleague who shared memories of Doran’s kindness and warmth.

A private family gathering will be held to scatter his ashes, with a celebration of life planned in Mason this fall. Glenn Doran is survived by his wife, Cathy, three children, and several grandchildren. His contributions to education and community will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
