Cheboygan Mourns the Loss of Beloved Coach and Principal Jim Tamlyn at 52

Cheboygan, Michigan – The community is deeply saddened by the passing of Jim Tamlyn, a former Harbour Beach girls’ basketball coach and principal of Cheboygan Intermediate Schools, who died unexpectedly at the age of 52. Tamlyn’s death has left a significant void in both the educational and athletic communities in which he played a prominent role for many years.

Jim Tamlyn dedicated 14 years of his career coaching the Harbour Beach Pirates basketball team, where he was cherished not only for his coaching skills but also for his genuine care for his athletes. He also taught history and physical education at Harbour Beach Schools, before transitioning to his role as a principal in Cheboygan. Throughout his career, Tamlyn’s passion for education and mentoring was deeply felt by his colleagues and students alike.

Harbour Beach Athletic Director Troy Schelke reflected on Tamlyn’s profound impact, describing him as an amazing coach and instructor who left a lasting impression on all who worked with him. Schelke emphasized the sense of loss felt throughout the community, stating, "Jim genuinely cared about his athletes and was an excellent instructor. His dedication will not be forgotten."

Jim’s wife, Tracy, spoke fondly of their time in Harbour Beach, noting the strong relationships they formed during their years there. The loss of Jim has brought forth an outpouring of support from both the Cheboygan and Harbour Beach communities.

In honor of his life and legacy, a celebration will be held on September 26th at 5:00 p.m. at the Headlands in Mackinaw City, Michigan. Family and friends are encouraged to attend, offering support and sharing memories of Jim’s contributions to the community.

Many individuals have shared their thoughts and condolences on social media. Maddie Elliott, alongside Tracy Tamlyn, posted on Facebook, "Please join us in honoring the life of Jim Tamlyn. For many years, Jim was a cherished member of the educational community at Harbor Beach and Cheboygan Area Schools. He dedicated his time and knowledge as a teacher, coach, principal, mentor, and friend to countless individuals."

The outpouring of support continues, as those touched by Jim’s life come together to celebrate his legacy. The family is deeply grateful for the support and condolences during this time of mourning.
