Charlene Delight Connors, 95, of Elwood, Passes Away at Compassus Hospice in Indianapolis – A Tribute to a Life of Service and Dedication

Elwood, Indiana – Charlene Delight Connors, aged 95, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2024, at Compassus Hospice in Indianapolis, surrounded by her family.

Born on March 10, 1929, in Tipton County, Charlene was the daughter of Glenn B. and Dalice E. (Dellinger) Haskett. She graduated from Wendell L. Willkie High School in 1947 and later married her high school sweetheart, Bob Connors, on February 12, 1948. The couple enjoyed 76 years together, raising three children and building a loving home.

Charlene was known for her unwavering dedication to her community and faith. She was a long-standing member of the East Main Street Christian Church, where she served as treasurer for 23 years and taught Sunday School. Her commitment extended beyond the church as she was instrumental in establishing the "Gray Lady" volunteer program at Elwood Mercy Hospital, contributing over 10,000 volunteer hours.

In addition to her church and hospital work, Charlene was actively involved with the American Red Cross Disaster Team, receiving the Red Cross Woman of the Year award. She also chaired American Cancer Society fundraisers, delivered Meals on Wheels, and volunteered with various organizations including the Elwood Historical Society and the Indiana Business and Professional Women.

Charlene’s legacy of service and her dedication to her family and community left a lasting impact on those who knew her. She is survived by her husband, John Robert “Bob” Connors, three children, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and numerous friends and neighbors.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood, with Rev. Roger Gardner officiating. Visitation will precede the service from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Elwood City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to East Main Street Christian Church, the American Cancer Society, or The American Red Cross.

Family and friends have expressed their condolences on Facebook. Cassandra Connors Parkins shared, “My sweet grandma (dad’s mom) passed away this week. She was my last grandma and will be greatly missed by everyone but especially my grandpa.” Brian Vitz, Angela Miller, Skye Edington, Holly Neil, Maria Tyler, Barbie Tarr, Mandy Phillips Slater, and Brittney Persinger also conveyed their sympathies and support.
