Catherine L. Camargo Tragically Struck and Killed by Vehicle on Route 70 in Manchester Township

Manchester Township, New Jersey – Catherine L. Camargo, a 37-year-old resident of Manchester, tragically passed away late Wednesday night, September 18, 2024, after being struck by a vehicle on Route 70 near Wilbur Avenue.

At approximately 10:41 p.m., officers from the Manchester Township Police Department were dispatched to the scene following a report of a pedestrian being hit by a car. Upon arrival, they discovered Camargo lying in the roadway, and despite the efforts of first responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle involved, a blue 2016 Hyundai Accent, was driven by 48-year-old Adam J. Lilley, also of Manchester. Lilley, who remained at the scene and immediately dialed 911, reported no injuries. Preliminary investigations indicate that the vehicle was traveling westbound on Route 70 under low-light conditions when it struck Camargo, who was standing in the westbound lane. Investigators found that the vehicle was in satisfactory condition with all required lights functioning.

Emergency services, including EMTs from the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Medical Services, paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, and firefighters from the Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Company, responded to the scene. Officers from the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office, the New Jersey State Police, and the Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office assisted in the investigation.

The community has been deeply affected by the tragic accident. Numerous tributes have been shared on social media, expressing sorrow and condolences.
