Beloved Community Leader and Volunteer Cecile Townes Passes Away at Age 87 in Hazard, Kentucky

Cecile Townes, a long-time resident of Hazard, Kentucky, and a cherished community leader, passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at the age of 87. Cecile was surrounded by loved ones at Hazard Medical Center.

Cecile, known for her contributions to the 4-H program and Perry County Extension Service, dedicated her life to community service and volunteerism. Her work with youth programs, including Little League Football, Girl Scouts, and Cub Scouts, touched many lives. In addition to her community involvement, she served as a Nutritionist with the Perry County Health Department and was a prominent member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, holding various leadership roles over her 50 years of membership.

Cecile is survived by her daughter, Lisa Townes, and son, Philip Chadwick Townes, both of Hazard, Kentucky, as well as her three grandchildren, Alexa Davidson, Dylan Cole, and Emily Cole.

Condolences poured in from the community, with friends and colleagues sharing their sorrow. “Prayers to the family. I’m so sorry for your loss. She was a very sweet person and I always liked her,” said Judy Combs. “Cecile was one of the best,” added Marietta Olinger Lindon.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel, followed by burial at Mill Springs Christian Church Cemetery in Monticello, KY.
