Aston Villa Legend Gary Shaw Passes Away at 63 Following Accidental Fall

Birmingham, England – Gary Shaw, the celebrated former football striker and Aston Villa legend, has passed away at the age of 63. Shaw tragically succumbed to a head injury sustained from an accidental fall at his Birmingham home.

Shaw, known for his crucial role in Aston Villa’s 1980-81 First Division championship and the European Cup victory the following year, suffered the accident on September 10, 2024. Despite being rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in a serious condition, he passed away a few days later.

The English striker, born on January 21, 1961, was a standout player for Villa, scoring 73 goals in 196 league appearances. He was also honored as PFA Young Player of the Year in 1981. Shaw’s career was marked by his impressive performance for Aston Villa, though his time was later cut short by a knee injury.

Stan Collymore, a former Villa striker, expressed his condolences, stating, “I’m sure the Villa family will rally round and give one of our greatest our love and support at this incredibly difficult time.”

Details regarding Gary Shaw’s funeral arrangements will be released by his family.
